Now that October is finally here, it’s time to pull your hands from over your eyes and come to terms with the one thing we don’t all don’t want to admit: Winter is just around the corner. That means fall cleanup and maintenance for your car.
The good thing about fall is that you still have some time to get in a few last, but incredibly important, do-it-yourself services that will go a long way towards protecting your investment until Spring. If you can’t do them yourself, simply book a service appointment at Sudden Impact Auto Body Shop.
Tips for getting ready for the change of seasons
Car Battery
The best time to check on your car battery is the fall. It is necessary to make sure the cables and terminals are snug for good contact. If these connections are not clean or they are corrosive, make sure you disconnect them and clean them with a wire brush. Careful when you disconnect your battery, you may have to type in a security code on your radio. There’s little else left to do. If you have removable caps on your battery, check the water level frequently and refill it as needed.
Headlights
Headlights can become hazy or cloudy as cars age, even more so on cars that are always parked outside. It is a cosmetic problem, but mostly it is a serious threat to safety. It can compromise your night vision and reduce the effectiveness of your headlights.
Tires
It is necessary to properly maintain your tires. You can perform monthly tread inspections to see if they need replacing. If you notice that your tires have less than 1/8-inch of tread left, then it’s time to go shopping. It’s easier and cheaper to buy all-season tired than buying tires for every season. But while they deliver good, they are never outstanding in performance. Winter tires on the other hand are outstanding on the snow.
Wash and Wax
This season is a good one to clean up your car. This way falling leaves won’t land on top of summer’s dead bugs and bird droppings. You can try a car was as well to keep your car looking like new. You can do this every two or three months. Think of it as a seasonal chore to protect and beautify your car.
Wipers
You should know it’s time to change your wipers if they leave streaks of water on your windshield. Wipers can degrade fast and they need changing every 6 to 12 months. If they deteriorate in less time, you can try cleaning the blade with a glass cleaner and a paper towel. That can help renew the baled for a few weeks or months when you’re not using them.
